Due to the many variations in computer screens and web browsers, the colours you see may not be exactly the same as ColorCote® or other paint brand products.

*”zincalume” and “colour / pre-painted steel” are used here as generic names for steel-sheet cladding.  GreenWood has multiple suppliers and may supply  your cladding from one supplier or other.  If you have a need for a trademarked product eg Colorsteel® or Colorcote® or Amorsteel® please confirm in writing.   It is also noted that doors are supplied in ColorSteel®.  It is accepted that your cladding can be supplied in any brand of Coloursteel® in the same generic colour, but that there may have a very subtle colour variance across multiple brands of colour/  pre-painted steel.   ColorCote®  may  not be an exact colour match to COLORSTEEL®.

Zincalume vs ColorCote® Steel Cladding

Choosing the right steel cladding is an important decision for any new build or renovation. Two of the most common options used across New Zealand are Zincalume and ColorCote®. Both provide strong, long-lasting protection for buildings, but they differ in finish, performance, and suitability for moderate environments. We also recommend MagnaFlow® ColorCote® for Coastal environments (see below).

Zincalume steel cladding is coated with an aluminium and zinc alloy that protects the base steel from corrosion. It has a natural silver-metal appearance with a subtle patterned finish that suits contemporary and industrial-style designs. Zincalume is a practical and economical cladding option for many inland and moderate environments throughout New Zealand.

ColorCote® steel cladding uses a Zincalume base with a specialised paint system applied during manufacture. This protective coating provides additional resistance to corrosion and allows for a wide range of colour choices, making it a popular option for residential and architectural projects across NZ.

Key Differences Between Zincalume and ColorCote®

Finish and Appearance
Zincalume has a distinctive metallic silver finish that remains unpainted. ColorCote® is available in a variety of colours, giving homeowners and designers greater flexibility when selecting exterior finishes.

Corrosion Protection
Both products are designed to perform well as exterior steel cladding. However, ColorCote®’s protective coating systems offer improved resistance in New Zealand conditions.

Cost Considerations
Zincalume is generally the more budget-friendly cladding option, making it popular for sheds, garages, rural buildings, and some modern residential designs. ColorCote® typically sits at a higher price point due to the additional coating system and colour finish.

Maintenance Requirements
Because ColorCote® has a factory-applied painted surface, it tends to require less ongoing maintenance and retains its appearance for longer. Zincalume can gradually develop weathering or surface staining over time, particularly in exposed areas.

Environmental Suitability
Zincalume & ColorCote® cladding is best suited to moderate environments. In areas with high salt levels, geothermal activity, heavy pollution, or strongly alkaline conditions, a coated system such as MagnaFlow® ColorCote® is generally the preferred choice.

What is MagnaFlow® ColorCote®?

MagnaFlow® is a high-performance coated steel designed specifically for New Zealand’s demanding environments. MagnaFlow® uses an advanced protective coating system applied to a steel substrate, providing excellent resistance to corrosion while maintaining a durable, attractive finish. It is engineered to perform reliably in a range of conditions, including coastal and high-exposure areas where additional protection is required.

Why We Use MagnaFlow®

Designed for NZ Conditions
New Zealand’s climate can be tough on building materials, especially in coastal regions. MagnaFlow® is developed to provide strong protection against moisture, salt exposure, and environmental wear.

Long-Term Durability
The specialised coating system helps extend the life of steel cladding while maintaining its appearance over time.

Modern Colour and Finish Options
MagnaFlow cladding is available in a range of colours and finishes, allowing homeowners and designers to achieve a clean, modern exterior while benefiting from a durable steel product.

Reliable Performance
By combining strength, corrosion resistance, and consistent coating quality, MagnaFlow® provides a dependable cladding solution for residential, architectural, and light commercial buildings across New Zealand.

Using MagnaFlow® allows us to offer a cladding option that balances performance, appearance, and long-term value, making it a strong choice for many modern building projects.

Different Fronts

Choosing the right shed front design is an important part of creating a functional and durable farm shed. At GreenWood, customers can choose from standard fronts, apron fronts, or extended fronts, each offering different levels of access, shelter, and weather protection. Understanding the benefits of each option helps you select the best shed layout for your machinery, storage, and day-to-day farm use.

Standard Front

A standard front is the most straightforward and cost-effective shed front option. With this design, the roofline finishes directly above the front wall or posts, providing a clean and practical opening to the shed. This option works well for general storage and machinery sheds where easy access is the main priority.

Standard fronts are commonly used when the shed will mainly house equipment, vehicles, or materials that do not require additional weather protection beyond the roofline. The open design also allows excellent visibility and ventilation, making it a practical solution for many farm and lifestyle properties. For customers looking for simplicity and value, the standard front remains a popular choice.

Extended Front

An extended front provides a larger roof overhang than an apron front, creating a generous covered area at the front of the shed. This design effectively forms a sheltered space that can be used for parking vehicles, storing equipment, or working outside while still protected from the elements.

Extended fronts are ideal for farmers and lifestyle property owners who want a versatile outdoor workspace. The additional 900mm coverage helps shield machinery from driving rain and sun while keeping frequently used equipment easily accessible. Like apron fronts, this feature acts as a “halfway” shelter between indoor and outdoor space, making the shed more functional throughout the year.

Apron Front

An apron front adds a 900mm extension to the roofline at the front of the shed, creating extra shelter just outside the main opening. This overhang provides a useful buffer area that helps protect machinery, vehicles, or stored materials from rain and harsh weather.

Apron fronts are particularly useful when loading or unloading equipment, as the extra cover allows work to continue even in less favourable conditions. It also helps keep the entrance to the shed drier and reduces water blowing into the interior. Apron fronts are a popular optional feature for customers wanting practical weather protection without significantly increasing the size of the building.

Barge Flashing on Greenwood Kitset Sheds

All Greenwood kitset sheds include barge flashing as a standard feature. Barge flashing (also known as barge capping) is installed along the sloping gable edges of the roof to seal the gap between the roof cladding and the barge board. This important roofing component helps protect your shed from wind and weather while providing a clean, finished roofline.

Why Barge Flashing Matters

Weather Protection
Barge flashing forms a protective barrier at the ends of the roof, helping prevent rain and moisture from entering the roof cavity. This helps protect the internal structure of your shed and extend the life of the roofing materials.

Improved Wind Resistance
By securing the edge of the roof cladding, barge flashing reduces the risk of wind uplift and helps keep roofing sheets firmly in place during strong winds.

Pest and Vermin Protection
Sealing the roof edge also reduces gaps where birds, rodents, or insects could enter the shed roof space.

Professional Finished Look
In addition to its protective role, barge flashing creates a tidy and professional finish along the roofline, enhancing the overall appearance of your kitset shed.

Standard on Every Greenwood Shed

At Greenwood, we include barge flashing as standard on all kitset sheds, ensuring every shed benefits from improved weather protection, durability, and a clean finished look.
